But because the economic meltdown has made it harder for students to get bank loans, several of these schools are increasingly stepping in, financing degrees in the same way a furniture store or used-car dealer might extend credit to customers.

Tips for taking out student loans

As credit standards for private loans have tightened, some for-profit, or "proprietary," colleges are now lending money directly to students.

Such borrowing may be worthwhile, but here are some tips for protecting yourself on any student loan from three experts: Deanne Loonin of the National Consumer Law Center, Tim Ranzetta of Student Lending Analytics, and Mark Kantrowitz of the Web site finaid.org.

— Fill out the FAFSA form for government aid, and always max out on federal grants and loans before turning to other sources. Rates are lower, and the new income-based repayment plan offers protections if you experience financial difficulties or choose a lower-paying career.

— Be wary of any lender that refuses to provide information on terms and fees. Make sure you understand the repayment requirements, both for while you're in school and after.

— If possible, apply with a creditworthy co-signer to reduce costs.

— Borrow as little as possible, no matter how much somebody is willing to offer you. Depending on rates and repayment schedules, every $100 in loans is likely to cost around $200 by the time you repay. However, borrowing is preferable to forcing yourself to work so many hours while in school that you fail to graduate.

— Find a school that won't set you up for failure. Especially at for-profit colleges, ask for data about graduation rates, job placement rates and average wages. If you're borrowing more than around $45,000 for a bachelor's degree, or $25,000 for an associate's degree, think seriously about finding a cheaper school.

— A good rule of thumb: Don't give yourself more total loan debt than your expected gross salary the year after you graduate. Another: Your total monthly payment on all student debt shouldn't exceed 8 percent to 10 percent of your monthly salary.

These schools call the practice a lifeline for students who couldn't otherwise afford an education. And in some cases, students may find better terms than they used to get from lenders like Sallie Mae Corp., which have recently cut way back on student loans to high-risk borrowers.

But some experts worry students will get pushed into loans they shouldn't take.

High interest rates
In fact, two publicly owned college chains have set aside roughly half their internal lending amount as a loss reserve — essentially telling investors they don't expect students to repay more than half of what they borrow.

Another concern: Some companies label such loans consumer financing rather than student loans, which carry particular disclosure requirements. One for-profit school, Colorado-based Westwood College, has been hit with a class-action lawsuit accusing it of fraud and arguing that its lending program violates state banking laws. Westwood charges a relatively high 18 percent interest but doesn't call its lending student loans.

"It's very alarming," said Deanne Loonin, director of the National Consumer Law Center's student loan borrower assistance project. The colleges "can structure the products in all kinds of ways — things like revolving credit lines, unsecured loans, even secured loans. It's this new thing and we're worried about it."

Westwood, which has been making such loans for eight years, calls the lawsuit unfounded.

Jessica Rosales was 17 when she enrolled at Westwood's Inland Empire campus near Los Angeles. She dropped out after one term and was later told she owed Westwood around $18,000 — nearly half in interest and collection fees. Rosales said that the school misled her about the source of her aid and that she never signed a loan from the school.

"It's basically been a curse for me," said Rosales, one of four lead plaintiffs suing Westwood. The interest charges have been dropped, but the bill remains on her credit report. She said she gets calls from collection agencies and is having trouble getting a mortgage.

Westwood's Apex loan program, which is used by about 30 percent of its 12,000 students, has no credit requirement, said Bill Ojile, senior vice president of Westwood. He said that terms are clearly disclosed, interest accrues only after the student leaves school, and students are required to exhaust all other options first.

Digital cameras have come a long way since their early humble beginnings. I still remember “investing” in my first digital camera. It was a 2MP HP PhotoSmart that left a lot to be desired, but it was still a significant step forward from my old film camera. These days, our point-and-shoot cameras pack plenty of features and lots of megapixels, but there’s always room for improvement.

For the consumer market, camera manufacturers have introduced a number of innovative features. We’ve seen the arrival of HD video recording, facial and smile recognition, multi-point auto-focus, and so much more. What will be the next big thing? Let’s look at some of the possibilities.

Entering the Third Dimension?
Why get stuck with just two dimensions when your photos can literally jump out at you? One of the fastest growing phenomena at the movie theater is 3D, as evidenced by recent films like Up and Monsters vs. Aliens. It could be time to go 3D with our cameras too.

One of the first to enter this market is the Fuji FinePix Real 3D digital camera. From what I can tell, it’s not quite ready for a full retail release just yet, but it does point toward what is possible. The 3D image is generated thanks to dual lenses and dual optics.
The biggest hurdle that we will have to overcome, of course, is having something where we can display these 3D images. There are some 3D LCD monitors out there, but they are far from mainstream for now. These two technologies will need to ramp up in popularity in tandem if either hopes to succeed.
Better Pictures at Night?
Three-dimensional photos may be a fun novelty, but they’re not all that useful. Possibly one of the next useful features to come to consumer cameras will be a better ability to take pictures at night. How?

A couple of guys from New York University have come up with a dark flash innovation that can effectively take much clearer and more accurate photos under low-light conditions. No longer do you have to deal with the shaky and blurry pics like the one shown above.
Most point-and-shoot digital cameras are just fine when they are provided with plenty of light, but most leave us with some really crappy pics when it’s dark outside. Something needs to be done to ameliorate this situation.
This seems to be quite a ways off, however, since those NYU kids are still pretty early on in their development. Even so, we don’t want to buy a camera that is dedicated to low-light photos, so it’ll have to be made more versatile before any sort of commercial release will be possible.
On-Board Picture and Video Editing!
In my humble opinion, the next major digital camera feature that will quickly rise to prominence and spread throughout the industry is on-board editing. There are already a handful of units that have some rudimentary functionality on this front, but they can go so much further.
Taking a look at the Apple iPhone 3G S, you’ll find that you have the ability to crop the videos you record without having to load them onto your computer first. It’s nowhere near what you’d get with iMovie, but this basic video editing can be a very useful feature.

Digital cameras aren’t connected to the Internet in the same way that an iPhone is, but that could be around the corner as well. The Eye-Fi SD card helps, in that regard, and it could be a move that’ll spread with time. If so, it’ll help to be able to edit both your movies and your still photos without the aid of a computer.
Even something as simple as cropping, adjusting brightness, reducing red-eye, and so on can be a huge boon for a point-and-shoot camera. We just need to see these functions refined and made as user-friendly as possible.

Sony Was Planning PSP Sans UMD All Along

I wouldn’t say that the Sony PSPgo completely came out of left field, but it still had a few surprises for us to consider when it was officially unveiled at E3 2009. As it turns out, Sony had been planning to release a PSP without a UMD drive for quite some time. The PSPgo is just the final fruition of that vision.

The biggest kicker is that Sony didn’t suddenly come up with plans to remove the UMD drive in the last six months or so. Instead, they are saying that they had major plans to make a PSP without the UMD drive right from the beginning of the system’s life.

Remember when the original Sony PSP first hit the market? It introduced the UMD drive, but I guess Sony saw that format as a temporary solution. So, they wanted to build “the right environment” for it first, whatever that means. Sony had been working on a PSP sans UMD for the last two years.

Now that digital delivery has become so incredibly popular, thanks largely to the iPhone and the App Store, it only makes sense that the PSP Go is able to grab new games without having to mess with physical media. Sony can cut costs, games can (hopefully) become cheaper, and everyone can win, right?

Sony Vaio Upgrades to Atom 1,6 Ghz

Yes, I understand that the Sony VAIO P is probably a lot more svelte and stylish than the rest of the netbook arena. It’s meant to be a higher end device in terms of fashion, but it’s been a little short on performance up until now. It was running on a 1.33GHz chip, but now Sony has bumped that up to the 1.6GHz Atom that you see just about everywhere else.

On the outside, the Sony VAIO P “Lifestyle PC” looks much the same as it did before with its ultra-wide 8-inch display and not-quite-in-your-pocket form factor, but the speed bump should certainly help. We think that Sony is using the Intel Atom Z530 here, but it could very well be the N270. That’d be a pain, eh?

In addition to the above features, the Sony VAIO P will also get 2GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, Verizon Mobile Broadband, GPS, Bluetooth and a webcam. The North American version will only ship with Vista, rather than the XP option in Japan.

At $1,499, the Sony VAIO P Lifestyle PC is far from a bargain. At that price, you could afford to buy three or four netbooks with comparable specs, but you wouldn’t have that cool VAIO name emblazoned on the top cover. That’s worth the premium, right?

Nokia N97, Lock, stock and touch

They don't get any bigger than that. A launch of this caliber can aptly be called inauguration day. The release of Nokia N97 is the Nseries counter-move that geeks have been waiting for since November. Easily one of the most complete smartphones ever created, the N97 has been haunting Symbian buffs' dreams for quite a while.

We're about to see if this feature-loaded son of a gun is the stuff dreams are made of and if it has the gut to stand up to the best on the market. The 5800 XpressMusic was cheap enough to easily be forgiven a couple of shortcomings but the N97 is not the begging type. Nokia-faithfuls are used to only getting the best treatment, so they won't settle for less with the Nseries skipper.

Obvious from the list above, the Nokia N97 hardly puts anything new on the table. It is however a bold try to fit all of today's top features under one hood and offer a nice ride at that. This certainly is an ambitious task by itself but the ever-expectant Nseries fans, who always want something new on their next handset, make it even harder. The Nokia N97 will need to be near flawless to get a warm welcome.

Nokia N97 will also be a major test for the still quite young (or immature if you want) S60 5th edition UI. The growing pains were expected and acceptable in the 5800 XpressMusic, but it's been 8 months since. The time is long enough in mobile phone terms and the market leader is simply expected to have had everything figured by now.

Sony PSP Go First Impressions

Leading up to this year’s E3 Expo in Los Angeles, one of the more anticipated announcements was the possibility of a new Sony PSP. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect, but we were reasonably certain that Sony would have something for us. Well, it happened and I had a chance to see the new hardware in person.

Just as the leak led us to believe, the new Sony PSP Go was indeed revealed at E3 Expo 2009. Based on the pictures, it looked as if Sony took the existing Sony Mylo Communicator hardware and reworked it into a gaming handheld. Seeing and holding the handheld in person, I can say that the overall form factor is very much like the Mylo, but it is a PSP through and through.

According to the Sony reps that I asked, the PSP Go should not be thought of as a true PSP 2, so to speak. Instead, it’s more of a sidestep on the existing PSP, working as if it were a PSP 1.5. As you may have already heard, the UMD drive has been ditched in favor of internal flash memory. Games are purchased and downloaded directly through the PlayStation Network.

The tagline that has been attached to the new Sony handheld is “Everywhere Just Got Better.” Since you can literally get new content just about everywhere (so long as you have an available Wi-Fi network nearby), I guess it did get better. Is this partly a response to the DSi Shop from Nintendo? Maybe.

The screen size on the Sony PSP Go (3.8-inch) is a little smaller than the regular PSP (4.3-inch) and the buttons are placed on a slide-out section, so the PSP Go is actually a fair bit smaller. The ditching of the UMD Drive in favor of 16GB of flash memory has also significantly reduced the girth compared to a regular PSP.

The button layout is identical to the old PSP as well. You get the four buttons for the d-pad, four face buttons, and just a single analog stick. It is interesting that they have removed all of those buttons that normally go underneath the screen, bringing those down to just start and select. One of the concerns that I had was with the possible shrinkage of the trigger buttons and while they appear to be a little smaller, they are just as usable. No worries there.

Build quality is pretty much on par with the other PSP handsets that preceded it. You once again get the same black plastic. It would have been nice to see a second analog stick, so that it could be more like the Dual Shock that we’ve come to know and love, but I suppose this would differentiate the PSP Go a little too much from the regular PSP.

I was asked by a friend whether he should buy the PSP Go or the Nintendo DSi as his next gaming handheld. I told him that it really depends on the kinds of games he wants to play and the kinds of games that we’ll be seeing on the PlayStation Network for the PSP Go. Since you can’t plunk in old UMD games from the PSP into the PSP Go, you don’t have true access to that library.

Hardware is one thing. In that respect, I think that Sony did a good job with the PSP Go. The slider appears to be quite solid and I like the inclusion of the 16GB flash memory. There’s no touchscreen here, but I feel that the PSP Go could become more of a competitor for the iPod touch than it is to the DSi. The difference is that the PSP Go will be much more dedicated to gaming and the graphics are there to back it up. The PSP Go is scheduled to launch on October 1, 2009.

Android cupcake on Mini 10v Netbook

There has been talk of a netbook powered by the Google Android “smartphone” platform, but nothing really from a major manufacturer just yet. Well, that changed a little today when the guys at Dell released a video of the Dell Mini 10v Netbook running the Cupcake update of Android. Yes, an Android-powered Dell netbook.

If it was just a video of an enthusiastic hacker doing the Android thing on his netbook, it would be a little interesting, but nothing that hasn’t been done already. What makes this video much more noteworthy is that it is an official video straight from Dell

More specifically, we are given the brief tour by Dell Technology Strategist Doug Anson. In the video, he shows the Dell Mini 10v netbook running on a few lightweight operating systems. We already know about the Ubuntu-powered “Netbook Remix” model for the Linux fans in the audience, but here’s Android too.

Anson makes it a point to say that nothing has been officially announced by Dell regarding an Android-powered netbook from the computer-maker, but the fact that they’re showing a very public video with an Android netbook says something. Anson seems to like the “small and snappy little operating environment” offered by Android.

Microsoft Twitter Account "Confirms" Zune Phone This Year?

We've been teased and abused for quite some time over the possibility of a Microsoft Zune Phone of some kind, but it seems that the team in Redmond will have something for us very soon. At least that's what we're being led to believe.

The Twitter account (follow me too!) associated with with the Office 2010 development team let it leak that there is something in the works and it could be ready in just a couple of short months. No real details were revealed, but the heavy hinting was definitely there.

One tweet said that "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers." That tweet would lead us to think about a Zune HD, possibly, or maybe some sort of new software. It could really mean just about anything. It's the second tweet, however, that's a little more specific.

It reads: "New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. :)" It's very notable that the team is talking about a pair of highly competitive smartphones rather than a "simple" media player like the iPod touch. Should we be expecting the first ZunePhone as early as next month? I guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

Is this Nokia 5900 XpressMusic?

We once knew the handset as the Nokia Tube. It was a major step for the Finnish phonemaker, since the renamed Nokia 5800 XpressMusic represented the first touchscreen handset from Nokia. Well, we are now ready for its successor.

For people who don't like the price and extra bulk of the Nokia N97, it seems that Finland is working on a new version of the Tube known as the Nokia 5900 XpressMusic. As you can tell, this is a very obvious follow-up to the first 5800 XpressMusic.

We'll have to take this report with a serious grain of salt for a few reasons. First, Nokia hasn't confirmed anything to say that such a phone was in the works. More importantly, however, the leaked photos are coming out of some random source in China, a country that we've come to associate with product knockoffs and clones.

In this way, it's very well possible that we are not looking at the Nokia 5900 XpressMusic at all. Instead, it could just be a Mokia 5900 eXpressSound or something. If we are to believe these leaks, though, we're looking at a slimmer chassis, a 5 megapixel camera, and Symbian S60 5th Edition UI.

Acer Aspire One 751 Netbook with Strange 11.6-Inch Screen

When it comes to notebooks and netbooks, there are a few standard screen sizes that most of us know and love. Most netbooks these days either have 8.9-inch or 10.1-inch screens, but not the new Acer Aspire One 751. Nope, this thing bucks the trend with its 11.6-inch screen.

As far as I can tell, this oddball number comes as a result of a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, effectively lopping off a horizontal stripe from an otherwise 12.1-inch screen. There seems to be a real push toward 16:9 for both laptops and LCD monitors, so why not netbooks too? It'll be good for movies, assuming it can handle the video processing.

Revealed in London yesterday, the Acer Aspire One 751 gets its juice from an Intel Atom Processor, Intel Mobile US15W Express chipset, and a 6-cell 5200mAh battery good for eight hours of enjoyment. Rounding out the specs are a 160GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G options, Dolby Pro Logic sound, multi-card reader, and WXGA backlit LED display

This hasn't been confirmed just yet, but it seems that Acer will be retailing the new 11.6-inch Aspire One 751 for around 349 GBP (US$519) when it ships later this month.

AT&T Officially Launches Nokia E71x Smartphone

We are slowly making our way to the next WWDC and the rumors surrounding Apple's famed conference are slowly starting to come down the chute. While we were teased with the possibility on several occasions before, however, there does not appear to be any mention of a possible MacBook Nano or Macbook Mini for WWDC 2009.

The optimist in me wants to believe that this does not eliminate the possibility of an Apple netbook unveiling at the conference, but there are no updates regarding the rumored device just yet. Cupertino could be keeping tighter wraps on this creation. Alternatively, there really could be no MacNetBook at the show.

So, what will be at WWDC? The current slate of rumors point toward some slight upgrades for the existing Macbook and MacBook Pro. I don't expect a design overhaul, since they made the jump to unibody aluminum numbers not that long ago, but the specs could get a bump. Further still, Apple may toss in some integrated 3G connectivity, possibly with AT&T since they already have that iPhone thing going on.

In terms of the power under the hood, Jalopnik says that the engine will be similar to the 3.5LV6 found in the FT-HS, completed with some hybrid goodness for extra efficiency and power. The best part is that the rumor has the Toyota MR2 launching at around $24,000.

Samsung NC310 Netbook Pushes Limits with 11 Hour Battery Life

While most other netbooks offer between two and five hours of battery life, the newly revealed Samsung NC310 goes so much further with a full eleven hours of computing on a single charge. Not surprisingly, this comes with quite the heavy caveat. The standard battery on this netbook tops out at "just" five hours, so you'll need the "extended" battery to achieve the 11-hour figure.

The stylish Samsung NC310 seems to be based on a similar platform as the already popular Samsung NC10, but it does come with a few upgrades aside from the aforementioned battery life. You get the same 10.1-inch LCD, 160GB HDD, and 1GB of RAM, but you also get WiFi, HSDPA, WiBRO (WiMAX in Korea), Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. There's no mention of the processor, but we'll assume it's of the Intel Atom variety.

Battery life seems to be one of the big things with new netbooks these days. The Asus Eee PC 1000HE does 9.5 hours on a charge and now the Samsung NC310 goes even further with its eleven hours. Aside from the introduction of that honeycomb interface, Windows Mobile 6.5 really isn't that different from the current phones running on Windows Mobile 6.1. There are some minor tweaks, to be sure, but it's not quite the massive overhaul that we've been wanting for some time now.

When I spoke with Microsoft at CES in January, they said they were still working on Windows Mobile 7 but they couldn't give me a date. Well, Ballmer has now given us a date. Well, more like a date range, but at least we're getting closer to what we want.

According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Windows Mobile 7 will not be hitting the primetime stage until some time next year. The unconfirmed word is that an official build of the smartphone OS will be sent to handset manufacturers in November and then consumer devices with WM7 will hit the pavement around April 2010.

In the meantime, Windows Mobile 6.5 (shown here) goes live in the second half of this year, Microsoft will not be making a phone of its own, and a "skinny" version of Windows 7 is being developed for netbooks.

it seems that touchscreens have become all the rage these days. You've got your cell phones with touchscreens, mobile gaming machines with touchscreens, portable music players with touchscreens. We like to touch things, I suppose, because this interface could be more intuitive than traditional buttons.

Whereas the Nintendo DS has been doing the touchscreen thing for quite some time now, it seems that Sony may soon be joining that arena with a touchscreen PSP of its own. The current PSP is a decent-enough portable video game handheld, but it needs something to bring it back to the bleeding edge of technology.

According to "several credible sources" reporting to IGN, the next Sony PSP will feature a widescreen, multi-touch capable touchscreen. This opens up all sorts of gaming possibilities, of course, as well as applications for secondary functions like the web browser, video player, RSS aggregator, and so on.

A recent survey asked if people would be interested in a touchscreen PSP and companies don't ask these kinds of questions if they don't have any interest in pursuing these kinds of features. Then again, I hear that Sony has officially denied these rumors... at least for now. A lot can change in a couple of months, so we'll stay tuned.

One of the lesser covered stories today is the revealed of the official Pesidential Limousine that will serve as Obama's primary on-the-ground transportation while he is in Washington, DC for the next four (or eight) years. Although it may be important to watch the environment, Obama is not going to cruise around in a Prius or a scooter. That's just not very presidential. Barack Obama is a man of the people and you get to know him quite well through his numerous books, but as the American President, he needs a certain level of protection. The bigger story, perhaps, is on the security front for Barack Obama's Cadillac Limousine. The doors have been reinforced with military-grade armor of several inches thick, protecting the First Family (and whoever else may be in the car) from any harm whatsoever. The glass is bullet-proof, of course, in case we find another John Wilkes Booth or Lee Harvey Oswald.

But wait. There's more. The Caddy also has its own air-generating system so that it does not need to grab any air from the outside world (as a regular car would). That's because the interior is completely sealed to protect the President against the risk of a chemical or biological attack. They also say that his car is fitted with tear-gas cannons, reinforced run-flat tires, and a wheelbase "built to resist bomb and missile attacks."

Turns to Toast in a Few Years

The shame in all of this is that the First Car (Ground Force One?) doesn't get to stick around after Obama finishes his service in Washington. It doesn't get retired to some museum or auctioned off for charity. As is the norm with all Presidential Limousines that have come before it, the Cadillac "Beast" is going to be destroyed after Obama's retirement "to preserve their secrets."

It's almost ironic. The limo is built to be indestructible and then they destroy it.

Among the notable specs on this new hotness are its 2.89-inch LED backlit touch panel, Intel Atom Z520 processor, Microsoft Windows XP Home as its operating system, and options to include GPS and a TV tuner. Seeing how well the Eee PC line has performed for Asus already, I would not at all be surprised to see the Asus T91 fly off the shelves too. Sony Ericsson C905 Camera Phone Emerges as Tender Rose

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony Ericsson was busy showing off all of its latest cell phones. The Sony Ericsson C905 camera phone has been out for a couple of months in Europe and the response has generally been positive for this 8-megapixel shooter. But that doesn't mean that SE is just going to sit idly by and wait for more compliments to come in.

In an effort to appeal to some more fashion conscious consumers, SE is now offering the C905 in Tender Rose. But wait, there's more. Sony Ericsson has pushed out a firmware update that fixes many of the bugs that plagued for the first release. New features also come with the update, like the ability to use Smile Shutter. This way, the camera phone will automatically snap the pic when it detects someone being happy.

There is also a feature that provides Smart Contrast. You know when you try to take a picture of a scene that is both bright and dim at the same time? Say you're on vacation and you have the bright sunshine in one part of the scene, but an intricate statue in another part of the scene? You either end up with a picture that is very washed out or a statue that has been shrouded in a shadow. The Smart Contrast feature tries to find the perfect middle ground.

Sony Ericsson said that the software update, which should be available around the middle of February, also comes with pre-installed Snapfish, a YouTube video application, and a few other new toys for you to enjoy. On a side note, Canadians can expect the C905 (along with Xperia X1) to launch around Q2 of this year.

Sony playstation compact Concept Isn't Very Usable

The prospect of a new PlayStation Portable is still up in the air. We were told that Sony's not working on one only to hear a couple days later that a PSP2 is coming next year. I'll leave that conjecture up to the rumormongers for now, but we still have to wonder what would the next generation PlayStation Portable look like? How would Sony refresh our interest?

Taking a look at Nintendo's strategy, they went from the Nintendo DS to the DS Lite, so I guess it would make sense to see a transition from the Sony PlayStation Portable to a smaller PlayStation Compact. Shown here is a completely unofficial rendering of what a PlayStation Compact (PSC) could look like, illustrating the possibility of a smaller Sony handheld gaming machine.

I do appreciate some of the innovations that this new design could bring. The smaller form factor would make the PSC a lot more pocket-friendly than its larger PSP counterpart. The embedded camera in the back could open up some interesting gaming possibilities, as well as expand the multimedia functionality beyond the MP3- and video-playing capabilities that we already find in the PSP. It'll still have Wi-Fi, of course, so that's good too.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm the only one who thinks such a design is completely unusable. Where's the directional pad? Where is the analog stick? Many enthusiasts have been begging Sony to bring a second analog stick to the PSP, so why would they remove any sort of directional control altogether? The entire left side of the handheld has been castrated, so you don't get left trigger buttons either. Looking at the right side, you seem to lose the standard square, triangle, circle, and X too. How are you supposed to play with this thing?

If you happen to find yourself at grandma's house for Christmas dinner or if you're going out to paint the town red on New Year's Eve, you may have your digital camera in tow. Unfortunately, many people don't really know how to get the most of their cameras, relying solely on all of those automatic settings and simply hoping for the best. The result, as I'm sure you've noticed, is pretty mediocre at best.

Mark Wilson has put together a simple guide for how to use your digital camera. It's mostly geared toward the point-and-shoot cameras on the market that most consumers would have, but there are also some camera tips and tricks for the SLR owners in the audience as well.

One of the camera hints that Mark provides is to not rely solely on the Auto White Balance (AWB) setting on the camera. Instead, simply going through and choosing the right white balance manually (incandescent light, outdoor cloudy lighting, etc.) can result in much more accurate color settings. If you find that your pictures are getting too warm (orange) or too cool (blue), a simple switch of the white balance can make a world of difference.

While some people like to dial up the ISO to capture faster-moving objects or pictures in low light conditions, this can oftentimes cause a lot of graininess and a lack of detail. Keep ISO under 400 for most point-and-shooters. Other tips include carrying a pocket tripod, minimizing (or diffusing) the use of flash, exhaling before shooting, and to shoot in RAW if at all possible.

Multitouch Arrives on HP Touchsmart TX2

Believe it or not, it's not sexy enough to have just a regular old touchscreen anymore and that's why HP is leaping ahead with the new HP Touchsmart tx2 laptop. The difference? This thing's got multitouch going on.

While Apple's MacBook line lets you do the multitouch thing on the trackpad, the HP Touchsmart tx2 actually lets you enjoy full multitouch functionality on the 12.1-inch screen. This is a convertible tablet PC, after all, but it's the first consumer-oriented model to have multitouch built into the display.

It will recognize two simultaneous points of contact, whether they be via your finger or a stylus. The downside is that the multitouch will not work under all circumstances. Instead, the functionality is only meant to be used with certain preinstalled software.

More specifically, the multitouch caters to the Mediasmart 2.0 software, a suite that lets you watch movies, look at photos, play music, watch TV on demand, and so on. HP has partnered wtih MTV networks to bring content from MTV< Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. The multitouch will also work with Office, web browsers, and photo applications.

Rounding out the specs are a 2.16GHz AMD Turion X2 processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 8GB RAM (nice!), 500GB HDD, Bluetooth, webcam, DVD burner, VGA out, and a digital pen. Prices start at $1150 with shipping commencing at the end of this month.

iTunes must be developing a bit of a complex, because every time you turn around someone else is calling something new the latest iTunes killer. The obvious target of that moniker these days is Microsoft’s infrastructure around the Zune. We’ll have to wait to see how that battle plays out over the coming months, but Microsoft is far from the only company to try to kill iTunes. Here is a look at five other efforts that can be turned up by a simple search for ‘iTunes killer’. There are plenty more where these ones come from.

Songbird

This open source software launched to much hoopla back in February, but that frenzy of excitement doesn’t seem to have kept up since then. Songbird is a media player built on the Firefox platform, and it is dubbed the first Web player. Some have even called it iTunes without the music store. Some would argue that the music store is a pretty good part of iTunes. Make your own opinion of Songbird, but check out the cute t-shirt models on their home page.

Spiral Frog

This site is promising a revolution, but we’ve been waiting so long for this revolution to get underway that I can’t be sure that it’s a fight worth fighting anymore. The idea is simple and attractive – in exchange for looking at a few ads you can download free music. The site has signed up with Universal and EMI, so a wide variety of music will be available. The free music will be protected with a DRM and won’t support iPods. Once the service launches it should take about an hour and a half for someone to post a way to get around that protection.

MTV Urge

The folks who have brought us the embarrassingly addictive Laguna Beach have also entered into the music business. MTV Urge is embedded into Windows Media Player, and it lets you buy music by the song or as a monthly subscription. It includes blogs from music insiders telling you what is cool like only MTV can. They even have a section in the FAQ which suggests how you might subvert the Apple DRM to get content onto your iPod.

Samsung

The Korean giant is looking to take on Apple. They have partnered with MusicNet to develop a music service of their own. They are doing the smart thing, though, and seemingly staying out of North America. They will initially launch in Britain, Germany and for the iTunes haters in France, then move across the rest of Europe and into Asia. They reportedly have 2 million songs in their library, so those who can access it will have choice. Later this year, the service and stores will offer tunes to compatible Samsung MP3 and portable media players, including the K5.

Nokia

Nokia partnered with Loudeye, a company that sets up PlaysForSure music stores for partners, back in 2004 to launch their own service, but it didn’t take off. When they decided to get serious about things they did what big companies do – they bought Loudeye. Loudeye has 1.6 million songs in its catalogue, so we can expect Nokia to use this in-house resource to create their attempt to dislodge iTunes from its lofty perch.

Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Netbook Big on Price Too

You may remember late last month when I told you about the Dell Inspiron Mini 12. By most accounts, it is the largest netbook to date, boasting a large 12-inch display. Keeping in mind that most (all?) other netbooks max out at the 10-inch range, the Mini 12 isn't exactly all that mini by comparison. Well, Dell has gone official with the netbook and it should be available for purchase as of right now.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 seems to be a good option for people who want the smaller form factor of a netbook but want a slightly bigger screen. Unfortunately, it also comes with a slightly bigger price tag. Shopping around, there's a good chance that you'll find an adequate netbook for under $500. That's not the case with the Mini 12.

Instead, the cheapest version of Dell's larger subnotebook goes for an asking price of $549. Remember that this is for the entry-level model. There are two other versions that move slightly further upscale for $599 and $678.

The $549 model comes equipped with a 1.33 GHz Atom processor, 40GB hard drive, and a three-cell processor. The higher models bump you up to the 1.6GHz Atom processor, six-cell batteries, and 60GB/80GB hard drives. All three versions, unfortunately, get a paltry 1GB of RAM and the only OS option is Windows Vista Home Basic.

Really? Dell expects us to run Vista with just 1GB of RAM and an Atom processor? I haven't gone hands-on with this netbook yet, but I imagine that this combination makes for a rather sluggish experience.

Motorola Knocked Off US Throne by Samsung

When mobile phones were first hitting the commercial market, Motorola was pretty much the be-all and end-all of the market. Motorola later got challenged by a number of different competitors, but it rose back to the occasion with the emergence of the RAZR line of super-slim flip phones? Well, it seems that the RAZR wave has subsided into a kiddie pool, because Motorola is no longer the number one handset manufacturer in the United States.

That glory-filled throne is now occupied by Samsung, a company that has been working hard on approaching just about every segment of the cell phone market. Despite tough economic times and slowed growth across the board, Samsung managed to increase sales in the United States by 6.2% in the past year. This bumps its American market share to 22.4%.

Motorola, on the other hand, saw its market share drop by a terrifying 11.6% over the same period, resulting in a current market share of just 21.1%. That's still a sizable chunk of our mobile dollars, but it's nowhere near where Motorola used to stand.

Nokia is the largest cell phone maker in the world, but it has yet to establish a huge presence in the United States for whatever reason. The Finnish firm held firm at about an 8.4% market share. I'd imagine that Nokia could snag more market share by flooding our operators with a wider range of handsets. Give us plenty of N-series and E-series smartphones, Nokia! Not everyone can afford the unsubsidized price of unlocked handsets, so making headway with cellular operators is the key.

And Samsung knows it. Motorola, on the other hand, continues to struggle. It's really got to give up on the RAZR and try something radically different.

Buyers of Yahoo! DRM Music Are Now SOL

Luckily, I'm not one of these poor saps. If you happened to buy any DRM'd songs from Yahoo's online store at any point, those tracks have now become completely and utterly useless. They're occupying space in your computer's hard drive for absolutely no rhyme or reason.

This is because Yahoo has decided to shut down its music download store at the end of September, at which point it will also shut down the DRM validation servers. Without these servers in place, all of those DRM tracks become unplayable. Don't worry, though, there is a recourse.

Yahoo is providing its former customers with two options. Either they can take the DRM tracks and re-download the DRM-free versions from Rhapsody for free, or they can opt to get a full refund. Here's your chance to overcome buyer's remorse.

Hey look! An Apple Store! I wonder what they have on sale these days. Hey look! An ad for the new iPod nano and the new MacBook Pro. How convenient.

It may feel a bit like a surreal experience, but that could be exactly what will happen in the near future in the Big Apple. There is talk that the New York City buses will get outfitted with flat screen displays instead of the static ads. Further still, the ads to be displayed on these flat screens will be location-based.

The ads can be targeted based on the neighborhood where the bus is currently roaming. Going even further, the ads could be targeted based on time as well, so the local Starbucks can advertise a hot cup of morning coffee in the AM, but an iced frappuccino in the PM.

The contract, which will see ads on the city's bus and commuter-train systems, is worth $800 million to Titan Worldwide and spans a period of 10 years. The new ads are currently being tested in Manhattan and will expand to 200 more buses by 2009.

Alcatel OT-I650 Shakes Things Up with Accelerometer

Alcatel is a company that largely focuses on the enterprise market and that's why the majority of its handsets are smartphones for corporate types. Despite this pedigree, the Alcatel OT-I650 really has nothing to do with Wall Street guys in business suits. Instead, it's an entry-level phone with consumer-minded ambitions.

There's no touchscreen, no QWERTY keyboard, no smartphone operating system. Instead, the Alcatel OT-I650 is targeting active folks with its inclusion of a G-sensor accelerometer. Switching between applications is done by shaking the phone, so you may want to disable this function when you go for your morning jog.

It's also notable that Alcatel turn to TCL Communication Technology of China as its OEM for the OT-I650, instead of relying on its French production plant. Does this speak to its quality too?

We use more data than ever, thanks to the higher megapixel count on our cameras, the increased bitrate on our music files, the higher resolution of our video files, and so on. We demand more than ever, but we also want this content to be transfered in the most expedient manner possible. 802.11g and 802.11n are fine and all, but some people want to push the envelope even further.

Melbourne University researchers are working on a wireless chip that can effectively offer data speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second. This 5Gbps technology has been named GiFi and it seems to only be able to support that speed at a distance of up to 10 meters. This rate, however, would "allow a full-length high definition movie to be transferred between two devices

in seconds." Seconds!

The 5mm chip itself makes use of currently existing CMOS technology and would cost about $10 to manufacture. GiFi operates over the 60GHz frequency, a band that has largely gone unused thus far. The goal is to have GiFi (jiffy?) ready for the public by 2009.

Nextlink Invisio G5 - world's smallest Bluetooth headset

Here we go - another claim of a product that is the world's smallest. In this instance, Nextlink has unveiled the world's smallest Bluetooth headset, the Invisio G5. It's not actually invisible, but it certainly is small. It measures in at just 3.3 cm long and 1.6 cm wide. It has a Soft Spring for comfort, and somehow a three button interface is packed into the tiny frame. The battery life is surprisingly stout for such a small package, too - four hours of talk time and 150 hours of standby.

It also comes with a Protective Charging Case, which, shockingly, protects and charges. That makes the headset bigger, but offers 20 hours of talk time and 30 days of standby, so it might be worth the trade-off. It looks, for now at least, that only Europeans will be able to access this tiny device. If you live in Europe and you want one you'll need 110 euros, or about $165.

Samsung Working on 12 Megapxiel Camera Phone

Who said camera phones don't cut the mustard when compared to standalone digital cameras? Oh yeah, that was me. Well, it seems that time's are a-changing, because Samsung is pushing the limit with a couple of newer developments.

First off, Samsung Techwin and Samsung Electro-Mechanics say that they've already created 8 megapixel camera modules with 3x optical zoom and these modules will be implemented into cell phones starting early next year. It's also got autofocus and supports F2.85.

The bigger story perhaps is that Samsung is also working on a 12 megapixel camera module for cell phones and this module is actually smaller than the 8 megapixel one. Can you imagine taking 12 megapixel photos with your phone? I hope you have a huge memory card!

Vodafone loses $40.7 billion in last fiscal year

If you are a company which has just posted a loss of $40.7 billion in one year, how do you stop your shares from going into a freefall? Bribe your shareholders. What Vodafone did isn’t quite that bad, but it isn’t that far off. At the same time that Vodafone announced that mammoth loss, they announced that they would return an additional $5.6 billion to shareholders. That’s on top of the $10.7 billion that the company had already pledged to return to shareholders after they sold Vodafone Japan to Softbank in April.

The losses for the fiscal year were due to a $43.7 billion write-down of assets which were acquired in 1999 and 2000 when the company was rapidly acquiring companies. Despite that, revenues were up 10 percent to $54.6 billion, and the return to investors was likely an attempt to reinforce the financial health of the company.

The financial news will not ease the pressure the company is facing to sell off their minority stake in Verizon Wireless to focus on European and Asian markets.

Bluetooth Piggybacks on WiFi For Increased Speeds

Bluetooth is a pretty convenient standard because it allows your mobile phone to quickly and easily pair with a variety of devices, including headsets and even your home computer. Unfortunately, Bluetooth is far from being the fastest wireless protocol on the block and thus, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has decided to take advantage of 802.11 technology.

As you know, IEEE 802.11 is a technology that is already present in many devices that demand greater speeds. We make expensive use of WiFi to connect our computers, surf the web, and do all sorts of speedy wireless transfers, especially when you hop up to the 802.11n draft spec. (When are they going to ratify that thing?) By taking advantage of 802.11 in tandem with the convenience of Bluetooth, users are able to use this two-phased approach for extra speedy transfers.

"This is the wireless technology equivalent of 'low hanging fruit,' " said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, the Bluetooth SIG. "What we're doing is taking classic Bluetooth connections -- using Bluetooth protocols, profiles, security and other architectural elements -- and allowing it to jump on top of the already present 802.11 radio, when necessary, to send bulky entertainment data, faster. When the speed of 802.11 is overkill, the connection returns to normal operation on a Bluetooth radio for optimal power management and performance."

Nokia Tube (5800 XpressMusic) Visits China Without Radios

We're used to seeing all kinds of knockoff products in China and how they may have reduced functionality compared to their legitimate counterparts, but it's a shame when the real deal has to get crippled too. It turns out that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (Tube) will be going to China, but that version won't be the same as the one heading to the rest of the world.

We hear that the Chinese version of the Nokia Tube will not have 3G, so you'll have to suffer through a turtle's pace for your mobile web surfing. Further still, there is no Wi-Fi, so it's not like you can try to up the speed doing that either. The lack of 3G is blamed on the lack of coverage in China, but no Wi-Fi? Seriously?

As if the Great Firewall of China wasn't bad enough. Similarly, it seems that China wants to get the iPhone 3G, but it doesn't want it with 3G or Wi-Fi either. How is that progressive?

RIM Working on BlackBerry Bold-Storm Hybrid with 5MP Camera

I was talking to my friend Matt Freedman a long while ago and we agreed that if RIM made a phone that was similar to the BlackBerry Bold, except with a touchscreen display, that it would sell like hotcakes. It could quite possibly be the perfect business mobile. Well, it seems like our little pipe dream is coming true.

There is a distinct possibility that Research in Motion is working on a BlackBerry superphone that combines a near-HD quality touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard. In this way, we could be looking at a hybrid between the Bold and the Storm in some fashion. Alternatively, RIM could do something similar to the HTC slider phones.

Among the other rumored specs on this yet nonexistent phone are a 5 megapixel autofocus camera and a full gig of RAM. It's like the Treo on 'berry-flavored steroids. Another source is saying that second and third generation Storms are already in the works. RIM is really taking touchscreens seriously, even if it may be purchased by Microsoft.

Broadband Satellite Wi-fi Access Being Tested on Southwest Airlines

When you've got a short commuter flight between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, there really is no point in breaking out the laptop to get some work done, but if you happen to be flying across the country, you've definitely got a few hours to burn. Some of us try to keep sane through iPod-fueled music or a good book, but being the techies that we are, we want to stay connected with the rest of the (virtual) world while we are a few thousand feet up in the air.

Southwest Airlines wants to satiate our need for in-flight connectivity, because the carrier will soon be testing in-flight broadband Wi-Fi access, effectively granting you access to email, YouTube, and -- yes -- even Mobile Magazine. Happen to be in the air during CES or MacWorld? You just may still be covered. This is all according to an official press release.

More likely than not, they'll place some rather hefty firewalls and barriers in your way, meaning that there will be no in-flight porn or even Skype conversations. There may or may not be fees involved for using their WiFi too. Look for tests to start on four planes this summer.

Dell Latitude XT Tablet Has Multi-Touch (Video)

Remember the Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC that was officially announced yesterday? It's already pretty exciting to see Dell enter into the world of Tablet PCs, but it turns out that the twisty computer has yet another trick up its sleeve. As luck would have it, the XT Tablet PC comes equipped with multi-touch capabilities, much like the user interface found on the ubiquitous Apple iPhone.

That's the good news. The bad news is that while the computer is technically capable of this ability, boasting all the necessary hardware, the Latitude XT does not have the software to run multi-touch. The capacitive touchscreen will get the necessary software and/or drivers when the latter are released at a "later date." Dell didn't get any more specific than that.

Don't you hate it when they tease you like that? Seeing how the computer is capable of multi-touch, I imagine that the hackers and modders will be able to unleash that capability before any official drivers are released.

SanDisk 16GB microSD Card on sale now

Even though it seems like SanDisk doesn't know it yet, the company's much-anticipated 16 gigabyte entry into the microSDHC memory card game has officially been launched into the public. As you can imagine, tossing 16GB into a package that is about the same size as a fingernail is no small feat (no pun intended).

Many smartphones these days make use of the microSDHC format for memory expansion, but I'm not sure if all of them will be able to read the higher 16GB capacity without a proper firmware upgrade.
